Donald Trump Greenland deal cited as «fantastic for USA» despite sovereign territory disputes

On Saturday, President Donald Trump announced via a Truth Social post that he had authorized the dispatch of a «hospital boat» to Greenland, citing a need to care for «many people who are sick.

» The statement, which lacked immediate clarity regarding the nature of the alleged health crisis, follows weeks of provocative rhetoric in which Trump has demanded total U.S. ownership of the sovereign island nation. The post included an AI-generated image depicting a fictional, massive seafaring vessel flying the American flag, branded with the name «USNS MERCY» and two red crosses.

Trump specified that he is collaborating with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry on this medical outreach, claiming the vessel is already «on the way!!!» In his digital address, the President praised Landry, stating, «Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there.» Despite these assertions, neither the White House nor the Governor’s office has provided official confirmation of the mission or details regarding any specific illness currently affecting the Greenlandic population.

This latest move coincides with escalating diplomatic friction between the United States and NATO. During recent discussions at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump revealed he had formulated a «concept of a deal» concerning Greenland, a territory under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. He emphasized his desire for the island «including, right, title and ownership,» describing the proposed framework as an «infinite deal» that would be «really fantastic for the U.S.A.» Trump reportedly spoke with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about the matter, though Rutte and other European leaders have remained steadfast in their position that Greenland is not for sale.

The strategy behind the President’s digital messaging has been linked to White House Communications Director Stephen Cheung. Cheung and his staff have frequently utilized AI-crafted memes and intentionally altered visuals to dominate social media discourse and aggravate political rivals. This «hospital boat» post appears to be another installment in that digital strategy, leaving it unclear if the announcement represents an actual military deployment or a symbolic gesture intended to reinforce Trump’s territorial ambitions.

Trump’s persistent threats against Greenland’s sovereignty have placed significant strain on the NATO alliance, which was established to provide a collective defense against the Soviet Union. European member states have angrily rejected Trump’s demands, alongside his threats to impose tariffs if the deal is not reached. In a defiant speech at Davos, Trump argued that his request for the territory was a «very small ask» considering the decades of military and financial support the U.S. has provided to Europe since World War II. He characterized Greenland as «cold and poorly located,» insisting that the U.S. essentially rescued the continent during its most critical historical moments.
