Defense Secretary John Healey accuses Russia of using Iran war as a distraction for sabotage

Britain and Norway conducted a major operation to deter Russian spy submarines in the North Atlantic.

The United Kingdom and Norway have concluded a multi-week military operation aimed at intercepting Russian spy submarines operating near critical undersea infrastructure in the North Atlantic.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey announced on Thursday that the Royal Navy deployed frigates, aircraft, and hundreds of personnel to track a Russian attack submarine and two specialized spy vessels. According to British intelligence, these vessels were operating within the UK’s exclusive economic zone, specifically targeting the underwater communication cables that sustain global data networks. Healey warned that Moscow is intentionally exploiting the international community’s focus on the war in Iran to escalate its aggressive activities across Europe.

During a news conference, Healey sent a direct message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that Western allies are fully aware of the surveillance activities directed at their pipelines and cables. He emphasized that any attempt to sabotage this infrastructure would trigger a severe response. Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik also confirmed that Russian maritime activity has intensified in shared Norwegian and British waters in recent weeks. Both nations identified the Main Directorate of Deep Sea Research, popularly known as GUGI, as the organization coordinating these high-stakes missions. This specialized Russian unit is designed to survey deep-sea targets during peacetime and prepare for sabotage in the event of a direct conflict.

The regional tension follows earlier detections of the Russian spy ship Yantar near Scotland and recent UK threats to board vessels belonging to Russia’s «shadow fleet» of oil tankers. Despite the heavy focus on Middle Eastern volatility, British officials are determined to keep Russia’s maneuvers in the spotlight, highlighting the strategic links between the Ukraine conflict and Iranian support for Moscow. Healey concluded by asserting that while Putin may hope for a Western distraction in the Middle East, the UK remains vigilant and ready to seize sanctioned ships or deter underwater incursions whenever necessary.
